WHAT PSYCHEDELIC FILMS TEACH BOLLYWOOD

A few things our drama films can learn from psychedelic genre
By Bhavnoor Minocha Apr 26, 2017

Every now and then, we flock to cinema halls to catch our favourite movie stars on the big screen. As the name suggests, the connotation of the same is much bigger. Movies have been the core reason of why the artists in our country are preached rather than followed. From their lifestyle to fashion, all we have today is because of them. We even tend to admit the fact that, the reason of buying a ticket is not because of the story but because of the set of actors performing. With the increase in exposure, there would soon be a stage of stagnancy. We are already shifting from the stereotypical drama to classic films. No doubt there is considerate change in conceptual terms, yet the overall outlook of cinema is yet to be discovered.

Psychedelic cinema is one such genre, which is untouched by majority. This category is influenced by the concept of psychedelia including visual distortion and experimental narratives. The visuals are so trippy that you really might end up laughing all through the way. After a thorough study of this genre, here are a few things which cinema can learn from them:

Sound design is an area where these films have the most control on. Besides visuals, audio is one such thing which binds the audience all along. It’s the binding force controlling the mind and heart of the viewers. The way these films experiment with the notes, experimenting with our sensory perceptions is unrealistically real. Cinema should come out their shells, play with tunes and amaze us.

The fact that this genre welcomes the audience to interact with the plethora of psychedelic imagery, Trippy graphics would drive the mood of the film. Usage of elements is done so creatively that never at a point it feels displeasing to the eye. Background is of more importance than the foreground. It is one such section that cinema can take inspiration from. Even the credits and angles are a step ahead than what we is usually screened.

Wouldn’t it be so amusing to see drama films with a psychedelic twist? I don’t know about you, but I am pretty excited.

A category which is all about visual pleasure, gives a whole new outlook to reality. The extravagant colours along with geometric figures, adds a reason of interest in the film. Direction is wholly based on this concept of ‘eye candy’, uprooting the viewer from reality. Added element of humour brings out the child in every man.

3. Extensive use of graphics
